We ask the hard hitting questions like…Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses?

So, as you know, we’ve been introducing you to our speakers who will be attending Web & PHP Con 2013. We know they’re a awesome group of people but we want to make sure you know that too (and maybe get to know a little more about them and what their session has in store for you at the conference). So we sent out a short Q & A to all of our speakers to dig a little deeper…

Next up, we have Jeremy Mikola!

Jeremy Mikola is a software engineer at 10gen’s NYC office. As a member of the MongoDB driver and evangelism team, he helps develop the PHP driver and contributes to various OSS projects, such as Doctrine ODM, Symfony2 and Zend Framework. Before joining 10gen in May 2012, Jeremy helped build great things with Symfony2, MongoDB, and a handful of other interesting technologies at OpenSky and Exercise.com.

1. Describe what we can expect from your talk at Web & PHP Con in 140 characters.

PHP Internals session: An account of one PHP developer’s journey into the undocumented realm of PHP’s C internals.

DOs and DON’Ts session: Reviewing DOs and DON’Ts of using MongoDB in production, with topics ranging from schema design, querying, and operations.

Zero-to-sixty workshop: A complete introduction to MongoDB for PHP developers

2. How did you first get involved in coding?

Writing games in BASIC on the TI-83 calculator.

3.What advice would you give aspiring web developers?

If you stop learning things on the job, it’s probably time to find a new one.

4. Which individuals do you most admire in the tech world and why?

Fabien Potencier’s productivity and time management.

5. If you could have 3 famous people round for dinner (living or dead) who would it be?

Jesus, Anthony Bourdain, and Jerry Seinfeld.

6.Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses? Explain your reasoning.

To assist in my decision, I shall refer to video evidence from Starcraft 2 (see [1] and [2]) where one Ultralisk successfully defends itself against 100 and 800 Zerglings, respectively. In both cases, the Ultralisk is the lone survivor. Relating this to the original question, I would conclude that one horse-sized duck would be more of a threat, and opt to fight 100 duck-sized horses.

7. What are you most looking forward to at Web & PHP Con?

Seeing familiar faces and meeting new friends.

Jeremy will be carrying out 3 sessions at the event in all:

DOs and DON’Ts of MongoDB

Zero to Sixty with MongoDB and PHP and

Inside the Sausage Factory: A Journey from PHP to C

To catch these sessions and much, much more ( all for FREE remember) just register on the website.
